FLC Choir Concert
Sunday, June 12
7:00 p.m.
On Sunday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m., First Lutheran Church
of Palo Alto offers an evening of choral and instrumental music
about Mary, Mother of God, ranging from the Early Renaissance to
the Baroque. The program follows Mary throughout the major episodes
of her life, as related in the Bible, and consigned in four of the
Mysteries of the Rosary: the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Assumption,
and the Coronation.
The choir, under the direction of Jacques Desjardins, will perform
Marian antiphons by Dufay, Des Prés, De La Rue, Byrd, di
Lasso, and Victoria. Baroque composer Heinrich Biber (1644-1704)
wrote a complete set of 15 Rosary sonatas for the violin, and distinguished
violinist Cynthia Miller Freivogel will perform the four sonatas
inspired by the Marian mysteries.
Paintings by Marguerite Fletcher on the Rosary Mysteries will be
exhibited in the sanctuary, which will open at 6:30 p.m. The concert
is at 7:00 pm, with a pre-concert talk on the many unusual violin
tunings used by Biber for his sonatas.
Suggested donation $10 general/$8 students and seniors.
