Koinonia Service - Parish Life Groups 2005-2006

Organization

In the New Testament, the Greek word Koinonia means fellowship, sharing in the common life of the community. At FLC, when you become part of our church community you are invited to join one of these groups. Each Group serves on a monthly basis, rotating twice a year. When members of First Lutheran Church are assigned to a Koinonia Group they actively participate or contribute financially to their Group¹s activities.

Activities

Each Group is responsible for preparing and serving refreshments during Fellowship Coffee Hour every Sunday after worship. Group Leaders coordinate the effort to see that families or individuals serve each Sunday.

Other opportunities that arise during a group's month of service might include special events such as the Annual Parish Picnic, Congregational Potluck Dinner, Advent & Christmas Smörgåsbord, Lenten Soup Suppers, Vacation Bible School suppers (Summer Nights), or memorial services held at FLC.

Coffee Hour Hosting

Often more than one family signs up to host coffee hour, so be sure to check the sign-up list in the parish hall to coordinate efforts.

As coffee hour hosts you provide:

  • Coffee (for most Sundays 60 cups is plenty - 4-3/4 cups coffee to 60 cups water)
  • Half and Half - a quart is plenty. Check the refrigerator for quantity on hand.
  • Baked goods, fruit, goodies of your choosing!
  • Beverage for children (2% lowfat milk, apple, orange, or other juice)
  • Child friendly snacks (pretzels, cookies, goldfish -- use your judgment)

Supplies you can expect will already be in the kitchen --(but check to be sure :-)

  • Sugar - Tea - Napkins - Juice Cups

To do before church:

  • Prepare coffee and figure out how you want to serve it (carts, carafes, on the table, etc.)
  • Arrange snacks and other beverages in the kitchen, ready to set out after service.

About 15 minutes before service is ended

  • See that everything is ready for the invasion.....

Clean-up:

  • Use dishwasher for cups, plates, utensils.
  • When finished, wipe out dishwasher and leave open for airing.
  • Be sure to empty out coffee pots and pack-up any leftovers.
  • Hand wash coffee pots, carafes, etc.
  • Wipe all counters, carts, and rinse sinks.

Lenten Soup Suppers

Check List

  1. Sign-up sheets for each soup supper should be available in parish hall for sign-ups several weeks in advance. It also doesn't hurt to make announcements in church from time to time. An announcement should also go in the bulletin. (Parish Life chair has taken care of this.)
  2. Supper begins at 6:00pm -- it's important to be ready to serve promptly. Set-up should begin at 5:15pm.
  3. The Sunday before you serve, check to see if there are enough sign-ups for soup. There should be at least 6 -to serve 12 people each. Make sure there is at least one vegetarian option. (It isn't vegetarian if it is made with chicken broth!) Also arrange a crew to help you put up tables and chairs. There should be about five, plus one or two in the center for the soups. The average attendance varies, but seems to be about 30-40. People should bring their own soup bowls and utensils, but sometimes they forget.
  4. Make sure the kitchen has these items; if not, you may need to purchase them:
    1. paper towels
    2. napkins
    3. place mats
  5. Your group is asked to contribute:
    1. coffee (for about 30 cups)
    2. cream (sugar is already in kitchen)
    3. milk
    4. butter
    5. 6- 7 loaves of french bread. (Safeway bakery in Menlo Park has a very good selection and bakes 3 times a day, so it's really fresh).
  6. At 5:15pm when you get to church for set-up:
    1. fill and start 35 cup coffee maker; also heat water for tea drinkers
    2. set tables with place mats or tablecloths and napkins
    3. put offering basket on each table
    4. put salt and pepper on each table
    5. put bread in baskets ( cut bread all the way through) and butter on each table
    6. on soup table:
      1. put out hot pads and soup ladles
      2. have cards or paper and pen to label each soup
be sure the label specifies vegetarian or not
    7. on card table in front of kitchen window:
      1. put up 30 cup coffee maker with cream and sugar
      2. put out a pitcher of milk
      3. 10-12 coffee cups
  7. The service starts at 7:00pm.
You can start clean-up and finish after service, if you need to. The tables and chairs need to be put away.
  8. Thank you!
